Remember the days when Indian television had just one channel? Do you recall shows like Hum Log, Buniyaad, or even the carefully crafted news broadcasts of the era? Content creators poured their hearts into a handful of offerings, and the results were often remarkable.
The early IIT campuses followed a similar model. With limited resources and a smaller student body compared to today, students and faculty were forced to master the fundamentals of their discipline. This excellence and camaraderie defined the IIT experience; we all cherish it despite our grades! This also paved the foundation for IITians’ later success.
Today, we’re inundated with a seemingly endless stream of channels and shows and the vast expansion of academic institutions across India. Quantity exploded, but where do we yearn for that same spark of originality and quality? Do we witness the same intensity and camaraderie among the students today?
In medical technology, we see a similar ‘Tyranny of Data.’ We generate massive datasets, dashboards, and analyses. But too often, this masks a need for proper understanding. Without a guiding hypothesis, we become preoccupied with the ‘how’ of data collection, not the far more vital ‘why.’
Consider the countless hours engineers and scientists spend in the lab, alongside the endless meetings managers attend. All hope to create a breakthrough. Yet, without a clear hypothesis to guide efforts, the data generated and discussions held lack focus. They need to deliver on the promise of the technology and become ultimately meaningless despite their volume. In a world of data overwhelm, the hypothesis is king – directing us toward the finish line and away from wasted effort.
Over the following posts, I’ll explore this data quandary, how it stifles innovation, and the importance of ensuring our work always begins with insightful questions. Together, we’ll discover how to make data a powerful tool of progress, not a barrier to it.
